Live Tropical Fish Food

What are the benefits and disadvantages of feeding live food?
I have a bumblebee goby and mono fish tank.
The bumblebees as your probably know only eat live or frozen foods, but my mono doesn’t seem to like either frozen beef heart, bloodworms, or tropical pellets.
Why?
I used to see him eat food but now he just hides, his friend who I got for him died of NTS when I got them the day after, but he survived, he just hangs around in the darker parts of the tank.
What can I do to get him out?
Help!
Try some mysis shrimp and Brine Shrimp for the Mono. You can also hatch your own brine shrimp and see if the moving food might gain his attention. Garlic additives have also been proved to stimulate a fish to eat.
To answer your main questions, the benefits to live food is that many fish are very picky and refuse to eat frozen or prepared foods at first. Live food can be used as a bridge to keep them healthy while still trying to get them to eat the other foods. The downfall is their lack of nutrition. There is also a potential for introducing fungus, bacteria or a parasite into the tank (more often seen in feeder fish, but can also come in live brine shrimp or other shrimps bought from elsewhere – hatching or raising your own reduces this risk). Feeding life foods can also increase the aggressive behavior in a fish. A fish that eats live goldfish all he time has a keen hunting instinct and might eat other fish whereas one that has never eaten live fish might never think to gulp down a tankmate.
As far as the rest of the question, I assume this is a brackish tank based on the livestock. If not, you will want to add some salt (premixed and introduced via small water changes that slowly raising the salinity over several days). If this tank is freshwater only, that would be the problem. These fish do fine in fully freshwater systems when very young, but need progressively more salty environments as they age. The goby is a brackish fish as well.
What are your water parameters? His hiding could indicate a raised level of ammonia or nitrate, a wrong temperature, or something else amiss with the water quality, like insufficient filtration. The water quality should be the first thing to check when a fish stops eating. If the levels are elevated, water changes should be done to fix that issue.

Elos Complete Marine Fish Food $14.99 SVM2 Complete Marine Fish FoodWhile we are used to changes in our diets everyday, our marine fishes are usually fed with the same food for long periods. When we need to feed our fish, unless we own an aquarium populated mainly by Soft corals where high level of nutrients is not a limiting factor, we are faced with the need to decide whether we want fish in perfect health condition or colorful SPS corals. Formulated with high quality ingredients providing high digestibility and palatability with Elos SVM we have developed the first high-nutrition fish food dedicated to feed the fish of our reef aquarium. Made to protect our fish`s health, Elos SVM is a complete balanced formula with all the required nutrients, saltwater crustaceans and 14 marine derived vitamins to provide growth, spawning activity and health of tropical marine fishes. With the use of Beta-Glucans we add natural substances into the food that are scientifically tested and proven to stimulate the macrophages, specialized cells within the body of the fish, that check and control the pathogenic agents development. Since its introduction in 1997 it has been proven by top fish breeders that Elos SVM can be used to enhance fishes` immunity and successfully strengthen their resistance against bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. Implementing the OSCAR technology, a “post-extrusion” system to incorporate high nutrition level into standard extruded fish food, we have increased the level of Bio-availability in our food. Particular attention has been paid to the origin of the marine ingredients in order to ensure the optimum ratios of the essential fatty acids. Using Low temperature Extrusion, and LT raw material heat-sensitive nutrients such as amino acids and vitamins are unharmed. All this leads to a high degree of feed digestibility and nutrient value allowing the user to feed much less food thus significantly reducing the level of organic waste into the water. Many types of seafood contain various inorganic phosphate salts intentionally added to them as preservatives. Using aluminum cans/bags and packed in a controlled atmosphere, we reduce the need to use preservatives thus significantly reducing the level of phophate released to the water. HIGHLIGHTS: Use of Beta Glucans: to improve fishes` resistance and survival rates High natural astaxanthin pigment levels: to enhance fish colors Superior nutritional profiles: excellent amino acid profile, high levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids, etc. Improved digestibility and palatability High quality pack: to reduce need of preservative implementing low phosphate level Potent flavoring/feed attractant: resulting in improved feed uptake and Food Conversion Ratios (FCRs)The pure aluminum packaging of Elos SVM has been developed to protect the food from external influences that could decrease the quality damaging the nutritional value. Elos SVM is available in: 40 grams aluminum tin50 grams refill aluminum bag. |
